The Perception and Factors in Successful Aging of Institutionalized Elderly

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to survey the perception and factor in successful aging of Institutionalized Elderly.

Method: The Subjects of this study were 82 elderly who was 65 years old and older in residing welfare facilities. Data were collected from December 1 to December 20, 2008. The Successful aging scale was Choi, Hye Kyong(2005)scale revised by Choi, In Young (2007). Data were analyzed by SPSS win 14.0 program.

Results: 1) The most important factor in perception of Successful Aging of Institutionalized Elderly was ¡¯The Health and Economy¡¯, the second was ¡¯The Pursuit for Meaning¡¯, the third was ¡¯The Moderation¡¯, the fourth was ¡¯The Welfare of Family¡¯, the fifth was ¡¯The Individual Growth¡¯, the last was ¡¯Individual Self-promotion¡¯. 2)There were significant positive correlations between successful aging of Institutionalized Elderly and education, active way of life, health status compared with others and life-satisfaction. Age had the most significant negative correlation. 3) Variables such as age, active way of life, marital status, education, health status and life-satisfaction were noted as factors influencing institutionalized elderly. Those variables could explain 43% of Successful Aging of institutionalized elderly.

Conclusion: It was found that Successful aging was related to various factors such as age, marital satus. life style so on. When developing a program to promote successful aging of the elderly, these factors need to be considered.
